It has taken almost 20 years of hardship and blessing for me to realize that the Lord has me exactly where He has always intended me to be. He has always equipped me with the proper tools (or the opportunity to learn them) for each battle I have faced. It has been my choice to learn to wield the tools and face the battles or walk away from them. He has provided, and I have chosen how to respond. Particularly in the realm of loving an addict/alcoholic, these battles and blessings have had a formative role in my life. What has come from a long journey of co-dependency and recovery has been a faith based on the understanding that the only true path to a recovered life is one submitted to God, Jesus Christ our only true Savior.
In a world of ‘self-help’ and ‘me-time’, walking through recovery can be a mine field of false affirmations, and empty promises that lead to a deep loneliness that cannot be filled…no matter how hard you try. I’ve tried. These promises and affirmations fall short because they are not foundational, they are not based in the truth that God has something bigger for you and for your loved one. A life submitted to God is a life desiring to feast at His table and to understand that you are worthy of the gifts and blessing He has for you, and to understand that suffering in His name is the worthiest calling of all. Desiring a life recovered from the devastation of addiciton/co-dependency is one that will require you to break a cycle you have lived in for a long time, perhaps your entire life. This cycle is only truly and fully broken when given to God. It has already been defeated by the death and sacrifice of Jesus, and he is awaiting for you to give it over and lay it at the feet of the cross.
My hope is that you find strength, encouragement, and hope on the pages of this site. That you have a place to turn to in the lonely hours of the night when your mind races. Know that you are loved, and you are not alone no matter how alone you may feel. Keep coming back!
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 ESV
